Why
choose the GCC Region ?
Aimed
at enhancing the national economies of the Gulf Corporation
Council countries, privatization is given top priority in their
development strategies. Investing heavily on the basic industries
and encouraging the contributions from private sector are
boosting the industrialization process in the region. In order
to lessen their reliance on volatile oil export earnings,
GCC countries have pumped huge funds into the basic industries.
Thus over the past decade , Industrial Investments in the
GCC have nearly tripled and achieved a total of 100 billion
dollars as per the GOIC’s figures. The figure is expected
to rise sharply in the near future. Among these basic industries
, the most promising one is the Aluminium industry , which
witnessed a sudden increase in investments.
Promising
Facts and Figures

1990 till 2003 ,crude steel production in the Middle east
has grown by about 6% per year compared to just 0.8% increase
in world Production, and thus making this region one of the
fastest growing producers in the world. In 2002 ,the total
production of finished steel products in the region were close
to 31 million tons ,attaining 3.8% of the global production
.Out of these 31 million tons,23 million tons were in long products. In
the next 5 years ,the total steel production is
expected to increase to 26 million tons of long products and

BASE METAL SECTOR
BOOSTS INVESTMENT
Despite the still week economic
conditions, GCC based metal manufacturers of base metals and
intermediates may have had their eye on the future by investing
heavily on their operations during 1999, according to a study
by a Qatar based organization.
Overall investments by GCC
entities in base metal and other industries totaled $13.44
billion last year compared to 1998's tally of 12.71 billion,
estimates the Gulf Organization for Industrial Consulting
(GOIC).
Capital outlay on the base
metals alone took up $6.28 billion against the $6.01 billion
in 1998, the findings add.
In
the various manufacturing categories, base iron and steel
took in $2.03 billion during 1999 from $1081 billion the year
before. There were 57 companies involved in this segment.
Non-Ferrous base metal industries
took up $4.25 billion against $4.19 in 1998. Capital outlay
by manufacturers in structural metal products was another
sizable contributor, pulling in $2.45 billion last year compared
to $2.27 billion in 1998.
The
share of the metal industries in the overall manufacturing
sector in the gulf is estimated at over 16 percent against
1998,s 15.6 percent.
As
for aluminium, gross investment by the various industry projects
- numbering 416 - in the Gulf was estimated at over $5 billion
during 1998. The comparable figures for 1999 were not available.
Of
this, the UAE contributed Dh.6.32 billion ($1.72 billion)
through 85 projects, according to the study. Its export of
Aluminium products fetched Dh. 2 billion, while the import
bill was Dh. 700 million according to a senior Dubai Chamber
of Commerce and industry official.
During 1998 the Gulf states
together took in $134.81 million worth of primary aluminium
(74,512 tonnes), $16,78 million worth of unwrought aluminium
alloy (10,877 tonnes), $11.02 million of aluminium scraps
(14,073 tonnes)and $155.93 million of aluminium semis (125,483
tonnes).
On
the export front, Gulf states shipped out $7.34 million of
primary aluminium (39,127 tonnes), $602.57 million of unwrought
aluminium alloy (391,414 tonnes), $25.40 million of aluminium
scraps (46,452 tonnes) and $13.34 million of aluminium semis
(11,469 tonnes).
These
developments will focus at ALUMEX 2001 and Metal & Metallurgy
Exhibition 2001 opening next February at Dubai World Trade
Centre.
The
event, being held for the first time in the Middle East, will
focus on Aluminium and metal production methods in force worldwide.
There will be also be discussions on how to tackle aluminium
waste.
It
will be backed by the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources,
Dubai Chamber of Commerce, GOIC, VDMA and Amaafond. Over 5,000
trade visitors are expected to attend the three day event.
Sixty
percent of the exhibition space has already been booked, according
to Emirates Exhibition Services, the organizers.
